Creating the Vertical Bracket
By staff on Nov 14, 2007 in Finale Tools
I get a lot of questions about vertical brackets and why Finale doesn’t include them as an option on the SmartShape Palette!! Well, those are great questions that only MakeMusic has the answers too….but I can show you how to create a drag-able, SmartShape bracket just like the preset one - ONLY VERTICAL!! :
- Click on your SmartShape tool and then select the Custom Line Tool.
- Go up to SmartShape menu and select SmartShape Options - this will open the SmartShape Options window.

- Select Custom Line from the Smart Lines option in the middle of the window, then click on the select button on the right-hand side - this will open the Smart Line Designer window.

- Within the Smart Line Designer window uncheck Horizontal from the top of the window and input the settings that you wish to have for your bracket. The Thickness and Hook settings are personal preferences.
- Click OK twice to get out of the windows.
- Test your bracket. Doubl-left-click on your score and drag up or down - viola, drag-able, fully editable vertical brackets!!!

You may want to add that using the shift key while drawing the custom smart line will make the “bracket” perfectly straight. Also, beginning the bracket from the top and dragging down will produce hooks in the opposite direction as beginning the bracket from the bottom and dragging up.

Rick-
Thanks for bringing that up! We are going to write a post about metatools that will lay out some of the extra keystrokes that make using Finale so much easier!
Thanks for reading!
