Where did the Mid-Measure Clef Go?!

There has been a change in the process of making a mid-measure clef in the new release of Finale. Before you could double-click on the measure with the Clef Tool and then click on a checkbox to create this. With Finale 2008, you can select a region (even a partial measure) to create a clef change with the Clef Tool.

  • Select the Clef Tool.
  • If your region is going to from the middle of one measure to the middle of another measure, click and drag to select that region. The end result should look like the following:
Middle of a Measure through the Middle of a Measure

  • If you are just going to have a clef change from the middle of a measure to the end of another measure, just highlight the partial measure where that clef change will begin and then Shift-Click the last measure of that clef change. The result should look like the following:Middle of a Measure through the End of a Measure

  • Double click that highlighted region to get the Change Clef window. Select your new cleft and click OK

  • Click OK and your Mid Measure Clef change will be created.

You can also control-click (right-click) the selection and then use the contextual menu to get to the Clef Selection tool. But what’s really cool is that you can make the selection as you have described, then simply type a number from 1 thru 9 or a letter from A thru I and a new clef will appear automatically. These are presets that MakeMusic has included but the user can re-assign the clefs to a meta-key of their own choosing as well.
